Common Causes of Heel Pain
Even though there are many problems that can manifest as heel pain, plantar fasciitis and Achilles tendinitis tend to be the two most prevalent causes. You can usually tell which condition you have by where your pain is originating:
Are you experiencing pain under your heel bone?
If you said yes then chances are you are dealing with plantar fasciitis.
Are you experiencing pain at the back of the heel?
If you said yes then chances are your pain is being caused by Achilles tendinitis.
What is plantar fasciitis?
Plantar fasciitis is when the band of tissue that runs along the bottom of the foot (from the heel to the toes) becomes inflamed. This is usually the result of overtraining, standing on hard surfaces for long periods of time or certain inherited foot imbalances such as flat feet. This condition is common among distance runners.
What is Achilles tendinitis?
This tendon, which connects your calf muscles to your heel bone, is the largest tendon in the body. It assists in running, walking and jumping. Even though this tendon can endure the stress of physical activity, overuse can cause this condition to flare-up. Just like plantar fasciitis, this condition is often due to repeated stress.

Since you really don’t know what could be causing your foot pain it’s never a bad idea to come into our office for a proper diagnosis. You should schedule a visit if your heel pain prevents you from walking or standing. If your pain also lasts several weeks and doesn’t seem to be responding to icing, rest and other at-home treatment options then it’s also time to come in for more aggressive care.

- If you can’t bend your foot
- If you also have a fever or experience numbness or tingling in your heel
- If severe heel pain develops right after an injury
- If there is severe pain or swelling of the heel
